Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are transitioning and looking good to show peak color by next week. It’s well worth a visit to see several waterfalls on one hike. Some foliage has peaked and other foliage is nearing peak throughout the park. We visited Dupont State Forest this morning to check out the color and see some waterfalls. Overnight temperatures have been warmer the last few days in Asheville and other lower elevations areas in Western NC, but that hasn’t stopped the color popping! The previous week’s sunny days and cooler nights have done their job. Also, chilly sunny weather speeds up the color change and warm weather and rain prolong it. The elevation is the biggest factor for the time of color change. Since you find the areas of best color by simply driving the Blue Ridge Parkway or other scenic roads up and down the ridges, you don't have to worry about exact dates. we have many weeks of autumn color in our mountains and foothills.
